Striped Canvas Fabric
It’s the stripes for me.
This fabric was such a joy to sew with. My only regret is that I didn’t have more of it. The Merchant & Mills Ticking Stripe Canvas is a sturdy fabric suitable for tote bags, seat coverings, pillows, an apron, and more. Who doesn’t like stripes, right! The canvas is not too heavy. It has just the right amount of stiffness needed to hold its shape.
I made a few items with this canvas fabric: tote bags, an apron, and a purse. I used Mimigstyle’s sewing tutorial (from Sew It Academy) to make a few tote bags to use for grocery shopping. I also used her YouTube tutorial to make an apron. Then, I used my own sewing pattern to make the Round Bag. This was the perfect fabric to make all of these items. When I saw this fabric, I knew immediately that I wanted it and I knew exactly what I would make with it (that was probably a first). I liked the stripes and I wanted to use them in different ways to make a contrast with the design. When I made the tote bags, I cut the stripes horizontally on the bags and the pockets vertically. For the apron, I cut the stripes vertically and the pockets horizontally. For the bag, I experimented with the stripes diagonally, horizontally, and vertically.
This canvas fabric holds up well. I’ve used the tote bags for groceries, and they make carrying them easier. I love having my own bags to carry my groceries. The apron can be used for sewing or cooking or whatever you need it for. I put several big pockets in the front for large items (i.e. scissors, ruler, etc.) and I attached a small pocket for pens, glasses, etc. I also added d-rings to the webbing to help tighten the belt in the back. The last item I made was the Round Bag. This bag can be made with or without piping. I made it with piping and two pockets. The Round Bag can be carried as a crossbody or regular shoulder bag.
The possibilities for this fabric are endless. I can think of so many uses for this canvas fabric and I’m sure you can also.
