S8656 Top
I love fashion. I’m pretty sure most of the sewing community does as well. Which is why fabric choice is essential for the right fit, fashion, and figure. For me (a full-figured woman), I prefer to work with knit fabric because it’s forgiving and usually promises a good fit. However, I chose this cotton poplin from Robert Kaufman in Pepper from Minerva. This make was almost a fashion fail. Besides, not knowing what I was going to make, I ran into a few problems.
I made Simplicity 8656 (top), which I’ve made a thousand times, so I was aware of the fit. I wanted to hack it by adding ruffles to the bottom, but I didn’t like the look, so I removed I ruffles and instead added ribbed knitting to the bottom and sleeves. Voila! An instant “everyday” shirt. I can wear this shirt everyday…with jeans, a skirt, or khakis.
I live for fashion and Simplicity 8656 is a top pattern that I’ve made so many times, that I could make in my sleep. It’s a quick and easy sew, but it’s also an easy pattern to hack. I’ve made it before with a ribbed knit bottom and sleeves; however, the main fabric used was knit. I was interested to see how this top would look different using cotton and ribbed knitting. I used a cuff ribbed knit from Hobby Lobby. I used bias binding to finish the neckline. I was quite pleased with the results. I hope you enjoy the photos.
