The Hickory Ensemble

Every month, the Sew Your View account on Instagram suggests a sewing pattern for participants to sew their view. January’s pattern was The Hickory Ensemble (a free downloadable pattern from Mood Sewciety). It’s a unisex pattern that has a raglan sleeve top with rib knitting and jogger style pants. When I saw the January “Sew Your View” pattern, I was excited and knew right away that I would make this for me and my son. My first task was to get the pattern downloaded and taped together. That was a task! Then I needed to decide on fabric from my stash. I chose a burgundy knit for the pants. I wanted to use this for the top and bottom but didn’t have enough fabric. I chose a gold floral velvet for my top. At the time of writing this blog post, I have yet to finish my son’s pants. So, I’ll give you the details about my ensemble. I dropped the crotch slightly and cut the front on the fold. I added piping down the outside leg. I also tapered the legs. For the top, I wanted an off the shoulder look, so I cut into the top and added rib knit. I cut the sleeves to fall right below my elbow and added elastic. I just did a simple hem with twin needle instead of the banded bottom. I love the way the top turned out. I am not as pleased with pants. I should have left the crotch as is. I wasn’t too happy about the way they turned out. However, overall I love the look! I may make me another pair. Update: my son’s pants are done and fit him just fine. When I finish his top, I’ll post about his outfit.
