Burda 6718
I used this pattern to enter the Pattern Review 2022 Sewing Bee. Round 1 was to make a hoodie with accents/embellishments.
Pattern Description: Burda 6718 - Men's Pullover Hoodie
Pattern Sizing: Pattern sizing is 36 - 46. It took me a while to figure out the sizing for my 30 year old son. I knew Burda patterns put their sizing on the pattern sheet; however, I couldn't find the finished garment measurements. Eventually, I found them on the front pattern piece for the hoodie. My son's chest measured 40 inches, so I cut the pattern out on a size 38 according to the finished measurements. I could have gone up a size and will probably cut out a 42 next time for a looser fit. Overall, the hoodie fit him perfectly. But he likes a more oversized fit.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? I do think the finished product looked a lot like the photo on the pattern envelope. I used two different color fabrics - blue and purple. I also used two different colors for the ribbed knit. I used a navy striped ribbed knit cuff for the sleeve and a light gray for the bottom of the hoodie. I added lining for the hood to protect my son's natural hair.
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions were very easy to follow. This pattern actually stated "easy" on the envelope and because most of the pieces are cut out on the fold, it sewed together pretty quickly.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked how quickly this pattern sewed. I am a fan of minimal patterns pieces and I love how it turned out.
Fabric Used: I used Modal Loungewear Plush Fleece in blue and purple from Joann Fabrics. I used about a yard of the blue and a half yard of the purple. I also used ribbed knit cuff which was on a roll from Hobby Lobby. I also used a stretch taupe satin from Zelouf Fabrics for the lining of the hood.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: For the accents, I added a satin lining in the hood to protect my son's natural hair. I also didn't taper the bottom band. I cut it the length of the bottom hem so it would have a boxy look. As for the embellishments, I added iron-on embroidery patches on the back and front. I added my son's producer name (C Major) on the back with an upside down ice cream cone. On the front, I added a sunshine smiley face patch.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Yes! My son is already planning all the hoodies he wants in the future.
Issues I ran into during sewing. I ran into several issues. I used scrap pieces of satin to cut the hood out and I didn't realize there was a part of the fabric with a corner cut away until I started sewing the hood. Instead of recutting the hood piece again, I tried to make it work. I pulled the fabric to stitch it up which left a shortage of fabric on the sides of the hood. This might not have been a big problem, since the hood edge would fold inside allowing for extra lining fabric. so I had to make it work. I also tried to use grommets and apparently, I did not attach them correctly because metal pieces were scratching the cording when I threaded it through the metal hole. So I removed the grommets and stitched a buttonhole around the punched hole.
Conclusion: I really enjoyed making this hoodie for my son. I will make this hoodie again.
