M7936
While perusing Instagram, I ran across a picture of a loose fitting knit jumpsuit (see the last picture). I knew immediately that I had to make this jumpsuit. Enter McCall’s 7936! The perfect pattern to recreate this loose fitting knit jumpsuit. Let’s get to the details.
I’ve made this pattern before and when I did, instead of using an invisible zipper, I used a regular zipper and added a triangle zipper tab at the bottom of the zipper to fill in the gap. This time, I made a few more adjustments to mimic the inspiration pic.
McCall’s 7936 only has 5-6 pieces depending on what view you choose. There is a front and back bodice/jumpsuit leg piece, front and back facing, and pocket pieces. The fabric recommendations are linen, cotton, or some other non stretch fabric. I decided to use a taupe rayon/lycra jersey knit as a wearable muslin for this project to test the fit.
First, I added an inch to the center of the front and the back pattern pieces to give me a more boxy look. Next, I dropped the crotch about an inch on the front and back pattern pieces. Then I moved the neckline up on the front piece to create a scoop neckline instead of a V-neckline. I also created a placket pattern to add buttons instead of using a zipper as the original pattern called for. Finally, I added ribbed knitting to the collar. Next time, I’ll raise the pockets a little, make and attach the placket better, and use a sturdier knit.
Issues I ran into while making this…I sewed the pocket upside down on one side and had to remove it, which left a hole in the fabric because it’s super delicate. I put the placket on incorrectly - I didn’t leave the bottom unstitched so I could sew it down in the front, so I had to improvise. Other than that, I love how this jumpsuit turned out and now it is my new favorite pattern. I am ready to make this jumpsuit in every color! I also want to make it in linen.
