Drop Crotch Jumpsuit

Who doesn’t love a great drop crotch? Right?! I remember when I fell in love with the drop crotch look. It was when I watched Season 15 of Project Runway and Laurence Basse created an Army green drop crotch jumpsuit. I said to myself, “I’m going to make that one day.” Well fast forward to today and all of the unfinished projects I’m finally getting around to making starting with this blog post. The inspiration for this particular style of drop crotch came from Shona (IG -@blackirishlabel). She was inspired to make a drop crotch pant and I used her inspiration to make mine as well.

This drop crotch jumpsuit actually started out as just a pair of self drafted pants. I wanted a drop crotch look and made two pair. One in this burgundy ITY knit (I think from Hancocks) and the other pair in a light weight gray denim from Joann’s Fabric. The pants were pretty easy to sew up but I needed a shirt to compliment the look. Sew, I pulled out my quick and easy top pattern, Simplicity 8656. I decided to make it a high low top so I could tuck the front in and leave the back out. Once I finished the top and paired it with the pants, I didn’t like the look. The top was too long and loose and made me look slouchy. Then I thought about a crop top and the very first Simplicity 8656 top I made. I paired it with the gray denim pants and was fairly okay with that look. But I still needed a top for the burgundy pants.

After a few weeks, I decided I would attach a top to make the burgundy pants a jumpsuit. I would use Simplicity 8656 and add a zipper in the back so I could get in and out of the jumpsuit. I didn’t have anymore of the burgundy fabric but I remembered I had some burgundy printed knit from Joann’s and it would make a good pairing. I made the shirt and attached it to the already finished pants. I was unsure how this was going to turn out since I was attaching this top to an elasticized waistband and I had to open the gathers to fit the shirt. I also should have interfaced the zipper opening since I was using knit fabric.

At first glance, I wasn’t too happy about the look, but after trying it on again, I was well pleased. I will; however, make the top a little shorter next time. I hope you enjoy the pictures. I had a blast taking them. Photographer: El Henry (hubby).
